HISTORY OF BARANGAY SUMILIHON
After the World War II, Barangay Sumilihon (as it is named at present) was one of those identified forestland areas with few inhabitants.
This is the third to the last barangay at the northern part of Butuan City, going to the City of Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte. The distance of which from the heart of Butuan City is eleven kilometers, a twenty to thirty- minute ride by motorized vehicle, multi cab, bus or by public jeepney.
According to the old folks residing in the barangay, Barangay Sumilihon was originally named or known to be sitio “Private”. This was named after when a road was constructed going to a private sawmill established and operated by private company which later, its operation was stopped and is no longer in operation. In the year 1945, the inhabitants of sitio “Private” has grown fast, where people from different neighboring barangays, municipalities/cities, some parts of Mindanao and the island of Visayas settled in the place.
Year 1946, one year later, the name Sumilihon, emerged from this certain “Sawmill-ilhon”, which means “Taga Sawmill” (known to be a resident or residing near the sawmill). This was constantly and continuously uttered and used by the passengers/residents (coming from Butuan City, neighboring barangays, municipalities/cities, and provinces as well) going to barrio Sumilihon. Until finally, it was cut short to Barangay Sumilihon up to present.
